Short description, ready to paste

Roguefort is a turn-based open-world roguelike where magic comes from cheesemaking. Players explore the continent of Cantal, crawl dungeons, sail and choose sides between five Guilds heading for war, or run a whole settlement in Fortress mode. It's made by solo developer Timothy Graham in Brisbane, Australia, and launches into Early Access on Steam on 13 October 2026 for US$9.99.

About the game

Roguefort is set on Cantal, a continent where cheese is the economy and the source of all magic, and five Guilds are close to war over it. You play an affineur, and what you do from there is up to you. Crawl dungeons, sail the coast, run a homestead, pick a side, become a vampire, or spend a season fishing while trouble builds two towns over.

It's in the tradition of Caves of Qud and Dwarf Fortress, and the cheese is played completely straight. It's not a pun game. It's a deep open world I'm hoping people can disappear into for hundreds of hours.

Why Early Access? There's about a year of work left to flesh out, tune and polish everything, and I'd rather do that with players than behind closed doors. 1.0 is planned for 13 October 2027, a year to the hour after launch.

What's in it

  • Magic you make yourselfRaise livestock, forage and age cheese into spells. Blind something with a smoked gouda fog and heal with a sunberry tomme, or just hit it with a two-handed sword. Where you settle shapes your magic too.
  • A world that remembersPeople work, grow old and remember what you did (and what you got away with). Reputation spreads between allied Guilds, and your choices lead to different endings.
  • Four modesAdventure on the handcrafted continent, with roughly 10,000 dungeons. The Crossing, a freshly generated continent. Fortress, a colony sim where you run a settlement instead of one character. And Survival: The Wilds, where you wash up alone with 10 items.
  • Four ways to see itClassic ASCII, 2D pixel art, 2.5D isometric or first-person 3D, all on the custom-built Opthalis Engine. Switch whenever you like.
  • Friends, if you want themOnline co-op for up to four players over Steam. The Old Mouth hub has an auction house and the first raid dungeon, The Monadic Descent.
  • Pick your poisonPermadeath for the classic roguelike run, Wayfarer if you'd rather die with consequences and carry on, or the new Hardcore mode.

Pixel art, so the bigger versions are scaled with hard edges and stay crisp. Need video? I've got a 2:42 gameplay trailer and a one-minute first-person 3D showcase in 1080p. Email me and I'll send a link.

About the developer

I'm Timothy Graham. I make Roguefort on my own in Brisbane, around a full-time job as an academic at QUT and being a dad.

"On my own" is only half true, though. Playtesters, artists, musicians and the Discord regulars have shaped a huge amount of it, and a lot of what's in the game came straight out of their reports and suggestions. They're all in the credits.
